ng Connect member Young & Well CRC gains government funding for wellbeing research
ng Connect member Young and Well CRC (http://www.youngandwellcrc.org.au/) has announced their partnership with The Smiling Mind (http://smilingmind.com.au/) Education Project which won a grant from the $12million Victorian Government Technology Innovation Fund this week.
The project is a web-and-app based ‘mindfulness’ meditation program focusing on building resilience in young people by providing tools and strategies to manage stress and prevent long-term mental illness.
The Smiling Mind approach was developed by a team of psychologists with expertise in youth and adolescent therapy. High profile child and adolescent psychologist Dr Michael Garr-Gregg, recently appointed leader of Young and Well CRC’s ‘digital education’ program said, “From a clinical point of view, Smiling Mind is one of the most common apps that I regularly use professionally with adolescent clients.”
The project will evaluate the Smiling Mind meditation program across a group of Victorian schools, measuring its effectiveness within classroom environments and as an early intervention tool. The funding will also support the development of an Android app, including tablet compatibility, with updated functionality and improved user experience.
Other participants in the research project include the Department of Education and Early Childhood Development, Insight SRC, and Deakin University.
